Hi, my name is Lorna Burns and I am a Clinical Psychologist with training in Psychotherapy working from a professional practice in Howick Village. I work with men and women from all walks of life and enjoy working with people from diverse cultural backgrounds. I have experience with most aspects of human living and can work with complex problems as well as those that arise in ordinary life. I believe that psychological health is as important as physical health and that it is well worth the investment of time to resolve persistent problems. I offer psychological and psychotherapy treatment for a wide range of issues.
Read further below about psychology and psychotherapy and how these treatments may benefit you.
Psychology is a vast field of study into human thinking, behaviour and emotion. Clinical psychology tends to deal with more severe problems like depression and anxiety and makes use of assessment and diagnosis of the problem to direct treatment for the client. This can take the form of short-term therapy and sometimes medication.
A Clinical Psychologist is trained to do this work quickly and efficiently and often will work in consultation with your doctor.
As your therapist, I will listen to your problems, ask questions and make an assessment of what the most significant issues are. I will then advise you on how to resolve those issues. This may mean further therapy sessions and a referral to the doctor for follow-up. Psychological treatment can be conducted in as little as 6-12 sessions for an acute problem (one that has happened recently).
Psychotherapy is a process of working in a deep and progressive way with problems that are persistent. It is usual to look at your history and relationships in therapy and sometimes to talk about dreams and memories that arise for you. Psychotherapy is a journey of self-discovery in which talking about yourself and your life reveals difficult aspects that can be understood and treated satisfactorily in a psychological way.
As your therapist, I acknowledge you as a unique individual and work with your specific problems in therapy. The therapeutic journey can be difficult at times but it is always interesting and can lead to significant changes in how you live your life and the relationships you have.
